Biography Juan C. Metrio

My name is Juan C. Metrio, co-founder and chief educator at JULU Bilingual Educational Services. I was born and raised in Medellin, Colombia. Growing up, I had a passion for learning and was always interested in mathematics. As a young child, I loved solving puzzles and working with numbers, which led me to excel in math classes throughout my schooling.

When I was 15 years old, my family and I made the decision to move to the United States in search of better opportunities. Although the change was exciting, it was also challenging. I was an English Language Learner (ELL) and struggled to communicate with my peers and teachers. However, my determination to succeed and my love for math helped me push through the difficulties.

I attended high school in the United States and, with hard work and dedication, obtained a degree in mathematical sciences. After graduation, I decided to pursue a career in education, with the goal of helping other ELL students succeed in math.

For seven years, I worked as a high school mathematics teacher, teaching all levels from algebra to AP statistics. I also taught after-school and Saturday remedial classes in English and Spanish. My passion for helping ELL students succeed in math led me to work in the night school program, teaching GED classes to adults.

My dedication to education did not stop there. I became a mathematics supervisor and was responsible for writing curriculum for all math classes. I designed pacing guides, exams, and workshops to improve mathematics education. To ensure that ELL students were included, I created all materials in both English and Spanish and incorporated mathematics strategies specifically for them.

After years of teaching, I was offered the opportunity to become a vice principal. In this position, I worked closely with bilingual teachers and students. As one of the main administrators for after-school and Saturday bilingual programs in my district, I was able to make a greater impact on the education of ELL students.

However, I realized that there was still a need for more resources to help Spanish-speaking ELL students succeed in mathematics. That’s why my wife, Luisa Londono, and I decided to create JULU Bilingual Educational Services, a company dedicated to providing educational support to Spanish-speaking ELL students.

Through JULU Bilingual Educational Services, we offer personalized mathematics tutoring and academic support to ELL students. Our program helps students gain the necessary skills to be successful in mathematics and, ultimately, achieve their academic goals.

Overall, my journey has been one of hard work and dedication. As a former ELL student myself, I understand the challenges that come with learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. However, my love for mathematics and my passion for education have driven me to help others succeed and achieve their goals.

Biography Luisa Londoño

My name is Luisa Londono, co-founder and general manager at JULU Bilingual Educational Services. I was born in Medellin, Colombia. I grew up in a town surrounded by nature, and I always had a passion for the environment. From a young age, I was fascinated by the natural world and wanted to do my part to protect it.

In high school, I excelled in mathematics and science, and I knew that I wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to use these skills to make a difference in the world. After graduating from high school, I decided to study environmental engineering at Lasalle University in Colombia.

During my time at Lasalle University, I took courses in probability and statistics, calculus, differential equations, and thermodynamics, which gave me a solid foundation in mathematics. I also studied soil science, biology, and chemistry, which provided me with a strong understanding of the environmental issues facing our planet.

After graduating, I worked for the governmental agency in Colombia that controls environmental licensing and permits. In this role, I used my engineering and scientific knowledge to develop solutions to environmental problems. I worked on projects related to water management, waste management, and air quality.

In 2017, I married Juan C. Metrio, who has been in the field of education in New Jersey for over 15 years. I decided to move to the United States to live with him and start a new chapter in our lives. In New Jersey, I worked as a teacher assistant for three years, where I discovered the need that bilingual students have for mathematics. I saw firsthand how difficult it was for these students to learn math in a language that was not their own.

With the help and guidance of my husband, we decided to create JULU Bilingual Educational Services to help ELL students become successful in mathematics and beyond. We want to provide school districts with resources to increase the mathematics proficiency level of ell and bilingual students. Our goal is to create a program where students can learn mathematics in their own language and enjoy the flexibility that virtual learning provides.

Through JULU, we hope to make a difference in the lives of bilingual students and help them succeed in school and in life. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to receive a quality education, and we are committed to making that a reality.
